The Abanotubani Bath Quarter in Tbilisi 1 228
The Abanotubani Bath Quarter is located in the historic center of Tbilisi under the Narikala fortress walls (entrance from the Grishashvili St.). The complex includes several buildings, most of them were constructed in the XVII century in Persian style.
The baths themselves are underground, and only the round domes can be seen on top - the roofs of the baths. Tourists can walk on the roofs and take photos here.
The Orbeliani Bath or Motley (Blue) Bath stands apart. Architecturally it resembles a mosque or a madras. It was built later - in the XIX century, and Alexandre Dumas and Alexander Pushkin used to come here. One of the underground baths was visited by singer Sting a few years ago.
The Abanotubani Baths were built on the spot, where hot sulfur springs had been found. Sulphuric water is considered to be helpful for the health (for skin, joints, etc.), but it has a strong specific smell. Tbilisi baths are valued for their sulphuric water, as well as for the skills of bath attendants: massage and peelings are available here, the baths resemble a traditional Turkish hammam.
Nowadays most of the baths in the Abanotubani quarter are privatized. There are common areas - women and men, as well as separated rooms with small sulfur pools, which can be rented for a family.
