The Governors Island used to be a military base and only in 2014 was first reopened to the public. Today, it is a recreational area in the heart of New York, a 7-minute ferry ride from Manhattan and Brooklyn. There are playgrounds, sports grounds, and a bike rental service. Festivals and concerts are held here, works by contemporary artists and sculptors are exhibited. The Hammock Grove Play Area features play structures for all ages and 50 red hammocks with a great views of the Statue of Liberty. The is a food court on the island, however, visitors are allowed to bring their own food and drinks.
Th Compost Learning Center welcomes children, where they can dig into the ground and learn about how to care for plants. The Teaching Garden, which hosts family workshops. The Slide Hill has the longest slide of NYC. Visitor maps are available in Chinese, Russian and Spanish. Smoking is not allowed on the island, neither are pets (unless they are working dogs). Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Catch-and-release fishing is permitted on the Island, but only with a valid New York State fishing license.
