The Gallery was founded in 1937, on the basis of private collections. Italian, French and American, Dutch and Spanish masters are well represented in the West Building: paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, graphics, decorative and applied arts. The East Building contains a brilliant collection of Modern Art. The underground passage between the East and the West buildings has a book shop, offering not only various materials on art, but also art supplies, books, toys, and games for kids.

The Sculpture Garden has a cozy cafe and an in the winter time - an ice rink. The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC is among the top ten most visited museums of the world.
