The Isosaari Island is located South of the garrison island of Santa Clara and was first opened to visitors in June 2017. Earlier, the island was used by the military and was closed to civilians. It takes 40 minutes to get to the island from the Helsinki Market Square by boat.
There are two sandy beaches, a sauna, a nine-hole golf course, and a cafe with a terrace, offering a splendid view the fortress of Suomenlinna and the mainland.
The island visitors can see the grave of the English sailor George Quinell, who died during the Crimean War (when the Santahamins were firing at British ships). In the center of the island there is a monument to the victims of the Civil War of 1918. More than 300 prisoners were killed in the concentration camp located on the island, nost of them are buried on the island of Santahamina.
Since 2017, ferries to Isosaari run from the Market Square in Helsinki. Dogs are allowed on the island.
