The Gelati Monastery is located on a hill near Kutaisi. The monastery was founded in 1106 by David IV the Builder, later he was buried under the arch of the main gate. Today, the gate is turned into a memorial. Some other great monarchs of Georgia also were buried at the monastery.
The complex consists of the Church of Nativity of the Virgin, the churches of St. Nicholas and St. George, and a three-tiered bell tower. Churches are famous mainly for their murals, created in different periods, and mosaics.
