The Georgian Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1920, and in 1950 it was moved to the building of the former Tiflis Theological Seminary, widely known for the fact that Stalin had studied there. At that time, Shalva Amiranashvili - an art historian - became the head of the museum, and now the museum bears his name.
The most significant part of the museum's exposition is a collection of Georgian art, from ancient icons and jewelry to modern works. Oriental art is also represented, such as miniatures by Persian court artists of the Qajar period. In addition, the museum has a collection of Russian and European art.
