The park takes up a total of 4,101 square meters, or 1,583 square miles. Hiking is widespread throughout the area, with 1,127 kilometers, (700 miles) of hiking trails.
Many of the mountain trails are inaccessible until early July, because of snow. Pitching a tent and building a campfire is permitted in designated areas, but special permission is required. Campsites which permit vehicles are available. Camping operates year round in lodging areas known as St. Mary and Apgar. Skiing is permitted only in valleys which are at low altitudes, away from the danger of avalanches. Snow mobiles are prohibited. Row boating and fishing is permitted on the larger lakes of the park. Red propane powered tour busses known as Red Jammers operate along the main roads of the park.
