Ekenäs Old Town (Raseborg) is a maritime city with lots of old wooden houses spreads along the seashore. There are various marinas, a beach in the center of town and rocky beaches in Ramsholmen. Ice swimming is available throughout winter in the outdoor swimming facilities of Stallörsparken. The Ekenäs Nature Centre helps visitors learn about exploring the Ekenäs Archipelago National Park.
Most of the buildings in the Old Town date back to the late XVIII and early XIX centuries, but the streets of Ekenäs have stayed the same since the XVI century, when it was still a fishing village. Swedish king Gustav Vasa granted Ekenäs its town charter in 1546 (a few years before Helsinki).
Street names such as the Hatter's Street (Hattmakaregatan), Linen Weaver's Street (Linvävaregatan), Cloth Weaver's Street (Handskmakaregatan), Smith's Street (Smedsgatan) and Tanner's Street (Garvaregatan) reveal that Barcken's peninsula in Ekenäs once was populated by skillful craftsmen.
Today, Ekenäs is a vibrant small town where shops, charming cafés, restaurants, and playgrounds for kids (including the Lion Park playground). The Ramsholmen nature park area is less than a mile away from the city centre.

Raseborg in pictures: the streets and wooden houses of Ekenäs Old Town, Finland (33)
A picture story from the Old Town of Ekenäs in Southwestern Finland. This small charming town is located half way between Turku and Helsinki, with about an hour's drive from each. Ekenäs started as a fishing village in the 16th century and was made a city by Swedish king Gustav Vasa (even before Helsinki). Many of the streets still bear the names of the crafts that used to be practiced by the home owners living on it.
