The Futuro House at The WeeGee Center in Espoo, Finland 4 175
Show on map
The Futuro House at The WeeGee Center's courtyard is open to public from May to the middle of September. The Futuro is a so-colled Space-Age Utopia - a plastic house designed by architect Matti Suuronen, in the shape of a UFO or a flying saucer. The house is elliptical in shape, it is 8 meters in diameter, stands 4 meters above ground and weighs 4000 kilograms. Inside, the house is red and yellow, there are six bed seats, a small bedroom, a central fireplace, a kitchen and a bathroom with toilet.
The Futuro house was originally designed as a skiing lodge that would be quick to heat and easy to construct even in rough terrain. First launched in 1968, the house made headlines in Finland and abroad. It was, however, too peculiar and too expensive to break into the mass market. With the 1973 Oil Crisis tripling the price of plastic, all hopes of the Futuro ever conquering the world had to be abandoned.
Today, about 65 known Futuro houses remain in various corners of the world and are perceived as objects of art. The Futuro House at the WeeGee Exhibition Centre in Espoo is one of the only two houses in the world, which are accessible to the general public.
