The Gallen-Kallela Museum is situated in the house, which was designed and built by the artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela in 1911. The house stands on a cliff and resembles a medieval castle. A panoramic view of the sea opens up from the tower of the castle.
The museum was established in 1961. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, personal belongings, and some documents of the artist are exhibited at the museum. Temporary exhibitions present the artworks of Gallen-Kallela's contemporaries, as well as some contemporary art. The museum organizes various activities and cultural events. Birthday parties for children can be organized on the premises, with activities taking place at the museum, and reception - at the Tarvaspaa cafe. There are special two-hour-long programs for school and pre-school groups, children can discover the castle, go on a treasure hunt or a nature trail quest.
Working hours depend on the season. In Summer: daily 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. In Autumn, Winter, Spring: closed on Mondays.
Children under the age of 18 get their tickets for free.
