Hanasaari is an independent operator administered by the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation. The building is located on an island; various events, conferences, festivities are held here, there is also a maritime hotel and the Johannes restaurant.
The cultural centre was inaugurated on 1 June 1975 by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and President Urho Kekkonen of Finland. The building was designed by architect Veikko Malmio, and its original interior decorations by Professor Yrjö Sotamaa. Hanasaari reopened after major renovation in April of 2017.
