Laajalahti Nature Reserve, bird-watching towers, and the Villa Elfvik nature center in Espoo, Finland 41
Show on map
Laajalahti is one of the premier birdwatching wetlands in the Helsinki-Espoo-Vantaa metropolitan area. This nature reserve is ideal for observing migratory birds and local species year-round. The area's trails and birdwatching towers make it a perfect destination for a day trip with kids.
The trails in the reserve are mostly stroller-friendly. Visitors can also stop by Espoo’s Villa Elfvik nature center, located at the north end of the reserve. Please note that the nature center is not always open to visitors. The Laajalahti Nature Reserve features open water, extensive reed beds, shoreline groves, and meadows. It provides vital nesting grounds and a rest stop for thousands of migratory birds during the spring and autumn migration periods (April-May and August-September). The reserve's purpose is to protect the shallow bay and surrounding habitat while offering opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Grazing livestock (cows) maintain the meadows, preserving the area's natural landscape. Visitors can enjoy the bay views and wildlife from birdwatching towers and trails without disturbing the habitat.
