The Suomenlinna Fortress or the Sveaborg Fort is situated on an island in the inner harbour of Helsinki and is on the Unesco's World Heritage List. This open-air museum takes up 80 hectares of rocky land.
Out of the 200 building located on the island, most were build for warfare purposes in the middle of the XVIII century. Old fortress structures are used as living, office and service quarters. Suomenlinna has its own shipyard and an excellent walking trail all around the island. An all-seasons ferry runs from the Market Square in Helsinki to Suomenlinna and back approximately every 40 minutes.
