The Urho Kekkonen National Park was founded in 1983, it is named after Finland's former president and prime minister. Most of the trails start at the Visit Center in the Saariselkä village. The park is a home to herds of reindeer, there are many walking trails of various lenghts, 200 km of marked cross-country skiing trails, bird watching towers, fishing is possible (licence is required) and mushroom and berry picking is allowed.
There are over 40 forest huts and cottages for public use and rent, 24 camping sites, 3 summer kitchens, over 130 designated campfire sites.
