The Bagrati Cathedral was built and consecrated in 1003 during the reign of Bagrat III. Later, the cathedral was destroyed in some military conflicts, and turned into ruins for a few centuries. Even in this state, the temple was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In 2012 the cathedral was restored.

The monumental Bagrati temple is located on a hill, so it can be seen from almost anywhere in the center of Kutaisi. It is possible to reach it on foot, via a staircase. The cathedral offers a beautiful view to the city, the Rioni river, and mountains.
