Linnoitus, the Fortress of Lappeenranta, Finland 3 669
The Linnoitus Fortress is situated in old Lappeenranta, close to the port, on the bank of Saimaa lake. The fortress was built by swedes in the beginning of the 18th century. The fortress houses the oldest orthodox church in Finland and several museums (South Karelia Museum, South Karelia Art Museum, cavalry Museum) and painters' and craftsmen's workshops.
All of the museums have a single entry ticket, for children under the age of 16 admission is free. In the summer - the Hiekalinna sand sculptures festival and music evenings are held in the fortress.
There are also restaurants, souvenir shops and art galleries at Linnoitus.
