The Return to Karelia, photo exhibition devoted to Soviet Karelia by Caj Bremer at the Gallen Kallela Museum, Espoo, Finland

10 September 2016 - 15 January 2017 - The Return to Karelia, a photo exhibition devoted to the visiting the villages of the Rune singers in Soviet Karelia by Caj Bremer, will take place at the Gallen Kallela Meseum in Espoo. In the 1970's and 1980's, photographer Caj Bremer and journalist Sakari Määttänen were given permission to visit areas in the Soviet Karelia that were closed to outsiders.

The resulting report was published in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper and for the first time ever gave the Finnish public opportunity to see the reality of Karelia behind the Soviet boarder. The photographs tell the story of everyday life in small villages.

The exhibition consists of 65 reprinted photographs, most of which have not been displayed before.
