The Finnish Railway Museum (Suomen Rautatiemuseo) in located in the town of Hyvinkää, which is about 60 km away from Helsinki. It is a national museum, devoted to the history of railway transport in Finland. The museum is located on the territory of the unique station complex of the former private railway Hyvinkää-Hanko, built in the 1870s.
The museum exposition tells about the history of Finnish railways from their foundation to present time. In the exhibition halls and the building of the locomotive depot, visitors can see carriages of the only surviving Russian emperor's train, Finnish locomotives, and diesel locomotives from different epochs.
Guided tours are offered to all age groups of visitors (including kindergarten and school activities). Group visits should be booked in advance at the museum's ticket desk.
How to get there?
It is possible to take a suburban train from Helsinki to Hyvinkää, which runs twice every hour (the journey takes about 40 minutes). By car, the museum can be reached from Helsinki (via motorway number 3) in about 45 minutes. There are signs indicating the way to the museum.
Opening times
In autumn, winter and spring from September 1 to May 31, the museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 15:00, on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. Monday is a day off. Every last Wednesday of the month - from 10:00 to 15:00. In the summer, from June 1 to August 31, the museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 (no days off).
In summer, the Strömberg café offers drinks and snacks to the museum's visitors.
The Finnish Railway Museum is a member of the Association of Transport and the Trafiikki Communications Museums of Finland, as well as of the International Association of Transport and Communication Museums IATM.
